Eating Healthy, Not Perfectly

Eating well is not about being perfect.

For me, healthy eating is about giving my body more of what helps it feel better: colourful vegetables, fresh ingredients, useful protein, fibre, good flavour, and meals that leave me feeling satisfied rather than sluggish.

When I eat better, I usually feel better.

I tend to have more energy. I feel more in control. I often find it easier to make other good choices too, such as moving more, getting outside, cooking from scratch, and thinking more carefully about what I put on my plate.

That does not mean every meal has to be perfect.

Healthy eating does not have to be complicated. A bowl of homemade soup, a colourful salad, a baked potato with a good topping, or a simple meal made with real ingredients can be a great place to start.

But fresh, wholesome food costs more and takes longer, right?

Not always.

Batch cooking and simple ingredient preparation can save time, reduce waste, and make healthier choices easier during the week. It can also help reduce reliance on shop-bought sauces, soups and ready-made meals, which can sometimes contain more salt, sugar, fat or additives than we might choose to use at home.

That does not mean convenience food is evil. Real life is busy. Sometimes we all need shortcuts.

But when I prepare more food myself, I feel more connected to what I am eating. I know what has gone into it. I can adjust the flavours. I can add more vegetables, more herbs, more colour, and more of the ingredients I want to eat regularly.

My quest for the perfect tomato soup is a good example.

What started as a simple recipe became something bigger. It became a way to experiment with flavour, texture, colour and nutrition. Different tomatoes, onions, garlic, herbs, olive oil, roasted vegetables, lentils, beans or spices can all change the soup.

Each version teaches me something.

Cooked in a batch and stored properly in the fridge, homemade soup can provide an easy option for several days. It can be lunch, a starter, a light evening meal, or something warming when time is short.

That is the kind of healthy eating I am interested in.

Not perfect eating.

Not complicated eating.

Not someone else’s strict diet plan.

Just simple, realistic ways to eat better, prepare food ahead, waste less, use good ingredients, and build meals that help everyday life feel a little healthier.

That is what I want to explore on Mr Soup and Salad.
